How a Water Softener Works

Once your hard water enters the water softener, it travels through tiny beads in the resin bed where the harsh minerals get left behind and the tiny sodium ions are released. This ion exchange results in soft water entering the home.

If you are a new homeowner, you may be wondering, “How do I maintain a water softener?“. Here’s our recommendations to help prolong the optimal level functionality of your water softener:

  • Check the Salt Level Monthly

    While you probably won’t need to refill your water softener’s brine tank with salt every month, it’s still a good idea to check on it regularly. To do this, just open the brine tank once in a while to make sure the salt is wet and under water. You will know it’s time to refill the brine tank with salt if the salt is dry and the water level is [getting] low.

  • Use High Quality Salt

    Your water softener utilizes the resin beads to perform the ion exchange process. They need to “recharge” periodically with fresh sodium ions for these beads to continue their function. The type of salt you add to your softener is what these resin beads will be soaking in – so make it count, and don’t go cheap. Here’s the types of salt you can buy:

    -Rock Salt – Cheap. Coarse salt filled with impurities that can clog your apparatus, and lowers efficiency.
    -Solar Salt – Better. Evaporated sea water.
    -Evaporated Salt – Best. 99.9% pure sodium.

  • Clean Your Brine and Resin Tanks Yearly

    Drain and clean your tanks annually. After you scrub it down, refill it with fresh salt and water. To help keep your resin beads clean, you can add a softener cleaner periodically.

  • Clean the Venturi Valve As Needed

    This valve can become clogged by sediment as it’s job is to move the brine into the resin tank. You will want to clean the valve cover and internal parts in warm soapy water.
